Year 1 and 2 have had a very busy week writing some wonderful stories! Year 1 have been writing Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Year 2 have been writing the Bog Baby's story. What better way to end the week than to share our stories with each other. We had a lovely time reading our stories to a partner and giving 2 stars and a wish. The stories were fantastic and both Mrs Harrisons were very proud 😄

Y5 children working on an exciting writing project with Antony Lishak, by Mrs Bailey

Date: 6th Oct 2016 @ 11:38am

What gift will you use to ignite the world?

Our Year 5 children have enjoyed working with Antony Lishak today on an exciting writing project. Mr Lishak is an author who writes fiction, non-fiction and historical stories. He has given us some of the books that he has written - one called Stars about people risking their lives to save others. It took him 8 years to research this book.

We asked him some questions to find out a bit more about him.

Where do you do your writing?

He has a writing shed. Sometimes he writes on paper, sometimes on the computer, sometimes he plans it out in his head. He is always thinking about possible story opportunities.

Where do you get your inspiration for writing from?

From everyday life. He believes we all have the ability to create stories in our head and if we listen to our imagination we'll be amazed at what stories we'll find.

He loves starting the story in a way that makes the reader stop and react, feeling that they desperately want to read more.

Which of the books that you've written is your favourite?

Stars. His second favourite is Henry's Boots.

How many books have you written?

Well over 100 - although he's only had 30 pubished. His message is, don't give up! If you want to be an author, persevere.

How old were you when you wrote your first book?

6 years of age - according to his mother!

Mr Lishak introduced the project, encouraging us to develop our ideas on what is important to us and consider how we can improve our world in light of this. Over the next few weeks we will be writing about these ideas and once our written work is completed he will put our pieces into a book, along with work completed by other children in neighbouring schools.

Topical issues written about today included war, homelessness, hunger, animal cruelty, global warming and poor educational opportunities.

Meet the Sugar Detectives, by Miss Jones

Date: 5th Oct 2016 @ 5:06pm

Think Before You Drink!

Did you know that children should have no more than 24g of sugar per day?

Following our visit to Tesco last week, we decided to investigate just how much sugar there is in our favourite drinks. We read the nutritional information to find out the sugar content in grams. Then we weighed out the amount in real sugar. We were surprised by the amount of sugar in apple juice and fruit smoothies because we predicted they would be healthier. Did you know apple juice can have up to 11g of sugar per 100ml?

Here is what we found out: least to most amount of sugar per bottle

Water - 0g

Fanta - 17g

Fruit Smoothie - 26g

Coke - 27g

Chocolate Milk - 28g

Ribena - 29g

Vimto - 29g

Volvic Fruit Water - 31g

7up - 36g

Apple Juice - 44g

Lucozade - 48g

We have been busy bees in year 3 this afternoon. As part of our topic, from Stone Age to Iron Age, we prepared and cooked stewed fruit with hazelnuts and honeycomb. We followed a Stone Age recipe; carefully measuring all of the ingredients before slowly stewing the fruit.  Thank you to Mrs Hilsden for cooking with us. Tomorrow we will taste our creations and evaluate our finished product.

Year 3 trip to Tesco, by Miss Jones

Date: 29th Sep 2016 @ 6:17pm

We all had a brilliant time on Tuesday, when we went to Tesco for the Farm to Fork Trail. Our guide was called Alan and he knew lots of foodie facts. We started off doing a fruit and vegetable hunt to explore different ways to get our 5 a day. We got to try lots of fresh fruit and vegetables straight from the shelves! We even tried raw broccoli! After that, we visited the sugar and cereal section to discuss just how much sugar we should be eating everyday. We also learnt how to read food labels to check the amount of sugar in our favourite breakfast cereals. At the end of the trail, we went into the warehouse to see behind the scenes at Tesco. This is where we made our own healthy, low sugar cereal.

The children's behaviour on the bus and in Tesco was absolutely fantastic so they were all awarded 'attitude of the day'.

European Day of Languages, by Mrs Hover

Date: 29th Sep 2016 @ 6:47am

On Monday 26th September, Year 4 spent the morning celebrating 'European Day of Languages'.  Activities included using atlases to find the outline of different European countries and matching countries to their flags.  In groups, the children researched either Scotland, Germany, Italy, Spain or Poland looking at capital cities, population, famous landmarks, food... creating an information board on their findings. They then presented their European countries to the rest of the class.

On Tuesday, the children thoroughly enjoyed learning some Polish from Franek.  Franek taught us lots of words, read to us in Polish and shared some tongue twisters which were really funny!

Year 1 on an Autumn Walk, by Mrs Harrison

Date: 16th Sep 2016 @ 9:26pm

Year 1 have begun learning about the weather changes and signs of Autumn. We went on an Autumn walk to find out how many of these signs could be found in our school woods. The explorers managed to find most of the Autumn signs although they did notice that there were not many piles of leaves yet!

The class also enjoyed developing their ability to read numbers up to 100 whilst developing their turn taking and gamesmanship skills playing snakes and ladders. I wonder how many numbers they can read on signs, packaging and at home over the weekend?
